The Endeavour Reading Vision
‘Fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for success in all subjects’
The overall intent of the Reading curriculum at Endeavour is to tackle disadvantage and inequality; to equip children with the knowledge and skills that they need to transform their worlds.
The curriculum aims to achieve this by appropriately scaffolding children along their journey from novice to expert readers. It aims to prepare children for success in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 by providing a smooth ramp upon which children are given the knowledge and skills they need to read increasingly challenging texts
Early Years
In Early Years, all children follow the same phonic curriculum. Phonics
is highly structured and sequenced so that pupils quickly build the
knowledge they need to read independently.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, all children follow the same phonic curriculum and the curriculum makes sure that pupils do not move on to more complex content before important prerequisite knowledge has been secured. This means that the focus remains on word reading until children’s fluency allows for a focus on comprehension.
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, curriculum focus moves onto developing knowledge beyond word reading that will allow children to read increasingly challenging texts.
